WAHM Candle Business

After many years of searching and researching, I have finally found a work at home business that I am excited to be a part of! It's called Scentsy, and they make wickless candles (like tarts), warmers, room sprays, etc.

As some of you may know, I haven't been able to have a "real job" for a few years now, because of my back. So, I've looked and looked, and just felt like a lot of things were a scam of some sort, or there were too many people selling for some companies, already. This is not the case with Scentsy. It's a fairly new company, being only 5 years old, but they are experiencing tremendous growth right now! Plus, in lots of places, especially in the East, there aren't a lot of consultants, yet. So, NOW is a wonderful time to join!

I'm really excited by this company, and the people who run it! It is Christian based, and the people involved are just a super crowd! And, I have my eyes set on winning some trips and cruises. I don't know if they have any gulf shores rentals in the works, but I'm not picky! LOL

Lovers of Books

Ok, I admit it, I'm totally into social networking and such. I love fiddling with my blog, and adding widgets to my site! LOL But this one, at least, is perhaps not so frivolous.

For anyone who loves to read, and loves to share the books they've read, and are reading, this is a really neat tool! It's called Shelfari. And, it allows you to build a Virtual Bookshelf! Isn't that fun??!!! I bet I know one person who would love it. That's my oldest daughter. She is very much into Dean Koontz, and similar authors, and she enjoys sharing what she's read!

You can use the social network built into the site, and connect with your friends, or find new ones, or, you can put the Shelfari widget on your own blog or social network! It works with Blogger, LiveJournal, MySpace, Typepad, Xanga, Vox, Wordpress.com, Facebook, and more. It looks like lots of fun for all you big readers out there!

Are You A Leader?

Some people are just born leaders. Do you agree? They can just take a group of people, understand what needs to be done, and coordinate and delegate until it GETS done. But, you don't have to be born with the skills it takes to become a leader. These skills can be learned! And, even better, they can be learned at home! For instance, you can get a degree online at Gonzaga University.

One key skill to being a leader is being able to organize. So, at Gonzaga University, you can get a Masters in organizational development. Learning such things as how to forge alliances, build hope and confidence, inspire shared vision, turn details into action, and think creatively! Those sound like wonderful skills for anyone, whether they want to be a leader or not!

You can also get a Masters in organizational leadership. People who have this degree have gone on to be Product Managers, Senior Financial Analysts, CFOs, Vice Presidents, and more!

If I were looking to go back to school and get into the corporate world, I would seriously consider going to Gonzaga University. Not just because I could get my degree online, but also their flexible scheduling, expert instruction, and accredited program. They have a lot to offer the serious student.

I'm all keyed up tonight! I just got done watching 24/7 Moms on MomTV.com! Well, it's not exactly watching, because you're chatting and interacting with a bunch of other ladies. They have a show every Tuesday night. You'll have to check momtv.com to find out the time for your time zone.

Tonight's show was a special 2 hour giveaway show! And it was themed around baby items. I don't have a baby, but I enjoy their show and the chat so much, that I went anyway! LOL And, I won an electronic ear thermometer! Yay!

Last week, I won a Swiffer Sweeper! Now, if I could just win a treadmill, I'll be set! LOL

It's the time of year that the weather starts getting cooler, the leaves start changing, and people start getting in the holiday mood. And by holiday, I mean HALLOWEEN!!!

Ever since I was a little girl, I have loved Halloween! I think I loved it more than Christmas. LOL What other day of the year can you dress up, act weird, and get away with all sorts of hijinx??? Plus, I adore the slightly macabre style of humor! Think Nightmare Before Christmas. LOL So, Halloween is truly my kinda holiday!

Of course, you can't love something that much, and never see websites that deal with it. And, because I am one of those people, I have a couple sites to share with you!

The first one is called The Neverending Wonder. It's got three different styles of online Halloween radio for your listening pleasure! My favorite is Weirdsville!

The next one is for the arts and crafts lover! If you love to decorate for Halloween, then you really should take a look at this site! It's called Spookytime Jingles, and it ONLY has Halloween art! I just love perusing the newest offerings!

Like many of you, I have been trying different ways to make money at home. Some things have earned a little, but nothing has made any sort of respectable income.

Family Fun in West Virginia

In just a couple weeks, Mountwood Park will be hosting the 21st Annual Volcano Days! It will be held Sept. 25, 26, 27, 2009.

Volcano Days celebrates the history of how oil and gas got started in this area. In fact, it's said that's how the town of Volcano got it's name. The oil came out of the ground so fast, it was like a volcano. After that, for a good while, the little spot between the hills, only 12 miles from Parkersburg, was like a gold boom town. And at its peak, consisted of stores, hotels, saloons, an opera house, homes, churches, two schools, a post office and its own newspaper. In 1879, there was a great fire that almost destroyed the whole town. Now, there are only crumbling remnants left to prove the great town once existed. It has reverted back to the beautiful wooded land it once was.

Among the many attractions are Miss Volcano, historical lectures, great food, and of course, the oil and gas rigs and engines. They are really something! I got video of them a few years ago. Let me warn you, they are loud!

You may also want to visit the Oil and Gas Museum in Parkersburg, WV. And if you like books, check out The West Virginia Encyclopedia. I highly recommend it! It has information on everybody and everything to do with WV!

Totally Free Tuesday for WAHMs Rocked!!!

That's right! Kelly McCaussey's Totally Free Tuesday webinar totally ROCKED!!!

For several years now, Kelly has built a business around helping work at home moms. So much of what she does is geared towards helping other wahms succeed. Of course, she earns a living, but a lot of what she offers is free. Totally Free Tuesday is a biggy!

There are sooooo many moms out there that want to work at home. Everyone has there own, personal reason. Some have small children that they want to be home with. Some don't like the way public schools do things, so they homeschool, and need to be home. Some have trouble finding jobs in their area. Some can't work a regular job, due to health reasons. These are just a few that I've heard, but no matter the reason, we all need help when starting out.

There are many women who have been successful at working from home, but Kelly has put together a group of just a few of them who also have become great mentors! A lot of these ladies also make a living from helping WAHMs, but they also freely offer their expertise to newbies. That's what I think is so wonderful about the WAHM community! The willingness to help others get started. Totally Free Tuesday was an all day web seminar that was totally free to anyone! Everyone involved really put a lot of time into preparing and actually doing it, and I really appreciate that!

I am getting ready to start a home business, so this webinar came at the perfect time for me! I listened to each portion, but I have a feeling I'll listen to each of them over and over, so the info really soaks in! There is sooooo much great advice and business information, but unfortunately, no weight loss tips. LOL

The ladies who did sessions throughout the day run different businesses, but they have all been greatly successful. One thing that impressed me is that they are ALL just regular people! They've just studied, tried different things, and worked really hard. That's one thing that was consistant throughout the conversation. Working at home is WORK. It's not a get rich quick business. It's very possible to get rich (or at least mighty comfortable!), but you will have to work for it.

You may be familiar with some or all of the ladies who did sessions, such as; Laurie Ayers, Kris Thurgood, Jill Hart, and Nicole Dean, just to name a few. It was so much fun to listen to them, and get to know them a little bit! I wish I knew all of them personally!

Virtual Classroom

I am a member of a wonderful group on Yahoo called City-O-Clay. It is for people who use, or would like to learn, polymer clay. When you get right down to it, it is a free teaching/learning environment. The lady who started it, NJ of norajean.com, is just an amazing lady, who has spent (if you add it all together) actual years teaching people to use polymer clay, and all for free.

A few years ago, I was a moderator of that group, and I loved when we would have lessons or "clay alongs" with video and chat. Usually, there would be a theme each time, and Nora Jean, or some one else would set their camera so everyone could view them, in real time, while they demonstrated a technique. But, for different reasons, all that stopped a couple years ago. And, I really miss it. And, with some changes, Yahoo just wasn't as easy to work with for this sort of thing.

That's why I was pretty excited to come across this website the other day. Wiziq.com is a site where educators and students can come together and have an online class with video and chat, for free! From what I understand, there can be many people watching the video and participating in the "class", so it would be a great way to do polymer clay tutorials!

Not only polymer clay, but really, anything. If you want to teach, or learn, this seems like a great site to use! No matter what the subject!

Being Dependant

Most of the time, I don't really think about it. I go on about my business, not thinking about what makes my world run as smoothly as it does. I clean the house, cook meals, watch tv, or browse the internet, and all the while, I am frighteningly not in control.

Oh yes, I take it for granted. I'm guilty. I admit it. I am totally dependant on electricity.

I know. You'd think I'd have more respect for electricity, but you just don't think about these things... until they are gone.

Last night, around 8 p.m., the electric went out. I still don't know why, but we think perhaps a car hit one of the electric poles along the road. But no matter what caused it, we were without electric for 3 1/2 hours.

For a brief time, I was able to read a book, but as the sun went down, I was unable to see the words on the page. So, out came the oil lanterns and the candle sconces were lit, but they didn't really make enough light to read by.

So, in the relative dark, I sat, laid, and paced and contemplated just how much I am totally dependant on electricity! It's scary, really. Especially my online life. I was totally disconnected from my social and educational resource. And, let me tell you, it wasn't a comfortable feeling. How many of us are at a loss if we can't have access to our browser, IM, or twitter? I don't know about you, but I was just beside myself.

There's nothing that could have been done, but it made me really appreciate a few simple things, like lamps, air conditioners, and computers. Ok, maybe they aren't exactly simple, but you know what I mean! LOL And, I can tell you, I really don't like being so dependant.

Dieting

As you may know, I joined up with Weight Watchers a few months ago. I started out really well, but I have been slacking really bad. I have lost some weight though. I've lost a total of about 15 lbs, since I joined.

I have been trying to eat better. I just haven't been tracking. I really need to do that, because THAT is one of the most effective weight loss pills that work for me. It seems like such a pain to do, but it really makes a difference. It makes you pay really close attention to what you put in your mouth.

I also need to drink more water. I drink lots of liquids, but not water. I make iced tea with Sweet-n-Low, and also drink Diet Pepsi, but they both have caffeine. I KNOW caffeine is dehydrating, but I still have a hard time drinking water, instead. I do good for a few days, then slack off again. I think I need a diet drill instructor following me around all day. LOL

Another really great "pill" is walking. I have been more active lately, what with gardening and yard work, but I really need to start taking actual walks. I would love to be one of those gals that walks a few miles a day, but I guess I won't do that, if I don't start with some baby steps. How does that old saying go... A walk of a thousand miles begins with a single step. I need to take that single step, then take another, and another. It's such a simple thing. I use the excuse that I'm hurting, which I am, but I probably would hurt much less if I made myself do it every day. Which one of you wants to come over and kick my patootie for me??? LOL

Name the Bug

Ever since we've lived here, I've seen this bug every once in a while. It's not very often, but they show up a few times a summer. They are gone almost as soon as I see them, but I've always liked seeing them, because they are so pretty! As you can see from the photo, they are a metallic green. Not all bugs are so attractive.

I never knew what they were called, and DNA testing was out, because it's extremely hard to catch one. It's hard enough to get one of film, let alone capture the real thing. LOL So, I searched on Swagbucks (get prizes just for searching like you would on Google), and found out what it's called and a little bit about them.

These little guys are called the Six Spotted Tiger Beetle. They are called a tiger beetle, because they are ferocious hunters. If you watch them, you'll see them catching little ants and things like that. Also, they normally won't be found very far from the woods. I guess that's why I started seeing them here, because the woods are at the edge of my back yard. They are just one of the many types of beetles that reside here in WV. :-)

I'd rather be camping

For the last week, I've either been picking veggies or preserving them in some way. Sammy and I went over outside of Marietta and picked about 5 or 6 bushels of tomatoes one day. Boy, you wouldn't think you'd get that hot just reaching out and grabbing tomatoes, but we sure did. My Dad had asked me to get him one bushel each of green and ripe tomatoes. So, two bushels were taken to him, in Grantsville, then I canned and froze the rest of them.

Then, we also had been given some green beans, so we had to clean and can them. When you have to look over every single one, it takes some time. Because of my back trouble, I had to go sit down every once in a while, too. Especially with the beans. I think because I had to stand in a different position, so it was harder on me. But I'm ok.

I tell you what, though, after all that, I'd rather be doing something else that is relaxing! LOL Camping for example. It's been several years since we took a vacation. We were hoping to this year, but it just didn't work out. Things are tight everywhere. But I can still dream, can't I?

So, after I won the (imaginary) lottery, I'd go buy me a really nice RV. head over to www.goodsamesp.com, and then get out on the road! First, I'd head to Florida and spend about a week at the beach. Play in the ocean by day, and sit by the campfire by night. Consume a few lobsters, collect a few shells, and get a great tan! LOL

Then, I think I'd travel westward, by way of the Southern states. I've never been farther west than Ohio, so it would be quite an adventure to see so much of the US! Of course, we'd have to stop in Texas to see the Alamo. Cause my hubby is a history buff. :-) Then on to California! Cause, you never know, the beaches there might be different than in Florida. LOL

On the way back home, I'd like to see the giant Redwoods trees, Mount Rushmore, and the Grand Canyon! Of course, I'm sure there would be lots of little stops to see the not so well advertised local attractions all over the US!

Yep, that's what I'd rather be doing!

Christi Friesen Interview on Polymer Clay TV

I just found this video, and really enjoyed it! PolymerClayTV does an interview with polymer clay artist Christi Friesen. I had never seen or heard her talk before, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that she's a "real person", if you know what I mean! LOL

And, little did I know, she's only been working with polymer clay for about 6 years. I find that really inspiring!

Garden Update

Well, it's time for yet another garden update! I know, how tiring, right? You've had to muddle through a whole, what is it, three or four garden posts? LOL You poor dears!

After the deer came back, AGAIN, and ate more beans, more cucumbers, and more tomatoes, we decided we had to do something other than Liquid Fence. Apparently, the deer get used to it after a while. So, we put in an electric fence. So far, so good!

This is Greg's huge Roma tomato plant. The plant itself is almost 5 feet. And, at last count, there were over 30 tomatoes on it. We've taken a couple, but I don't think the deer have eaten any of them yet.

This is my sad little Square Foot green bean patch. The deer ate from it at least twice, so it was looking pretty ragged, but it seems to be perking back up! Oh, I have to mention. I got my bean seeds at the True Value in Marietta. The label said it was bush beans, but apparently there was an accident or something at the seed factory, because there are both bush and vining beans in there. I have yet to figure out how to put up poles or anything in my square garden, and still be able to reach all of them.

My zucchini are still doing great, although, I took out the cauliflower. They just weren't doing anything other than feeding bugs. LOL I'll have to put them out earlier next year.

Ditto with the cabbages. They weren't getting eaten as bad though. I don't know why. The bell peppers are doing great, though! They are supposed to be orange when they're ripe, hence the yellow color now.

Japanese Lanterns

When we went to my brother's house on the 4th, I noticed they had a lovely patio and deck area. One section had the small pool, and the other section had a small sitting area with an outdoor fireplace. That would be a nice spot to cuddle with the hubs on a cool evening. ;-)

One part of their decor I really liked, though, was the Japanese lanterns hanging from a small tree. I didn't get to see them at night, but I bet they are just lovely! I would love to have something like that. We haven't been able to build a patio on the house yet, but I hope it's someday soon!

If it were up to me, I'd have the Japanese lanterns strung up along the fence and back in our little wooded area, but I'd have to find some discount lights first.

Of course, I could try making my own, but that would be a LOT of lanterns! LOL

Dog Hair and Dust

I don't know why it is, but my german shepherd dog sheds ALL the time. I try to keep him brushed, but so far the count is, Me - 10, Max - 127. LOL It's not that he doesn't like being brushed, it's just hard for me to wrestle with him while he's wiggling around. My back doesn't like wrestling. Go figure. LOL

So, anyway, there is fur all over the place. I can sweep one day, and the next day, there will be giant dustballs of fur rolling around the kitchen. That's a pretty easy clean, but it seems to really stick to carpet. I keep telling my husband that I want to rip up all the carpet and put in hard wood floors. Then, we can put down rugs, if we want to, as they would be a lot easier to clean.

I think that would help with the dust problem, too. I've been battling it for years. I honestly think when the previous owner was getting our house ready to sell, they didn't change the mats under the carpet when they installed new. Someone spilled water on the carpet not long after we moved in, and before we knew it, there was a dark stain on the carpet. Now, I don't know about your water, but our water ain't dark. LOL So, I think now, the pad is probably dry rotting and releasing that nasty dust when we walk around.

It's not like it's hard to wipe up, but it just makes me want to pull my hair out! It will be back within a couple hours of dusting. No kidding! So, it's either pull up the carpet..... or MOVE!!! Oh... ok, hubby nixed that idea. Geesh, he's hard to get along with. LOL

I was a little bummed, because some deer at a couple things last night. I don't understand it, because we have been using Liquid Fence. Sammy and I went ahead and sprayed some more around this evening, so, hopefully, they won't come back again tonight.

I'm still working on losing weight. It's rough going for anyone, but when you have the added benefit of chronic pain, it's just that much harder. I have not been good about logging my foods, like I'm supposed to do on Weight Watchers. I have been trying to eat better foods, but I know I haven't been perfect.

I always like to learn about foods that are natural appetite suppressants, because natural is best, and we all need help to beat those hunger pains. I've found five good things you can eat that will help you with that problem.

Apples are a great food to eat when dieting, or even when you're not! LOL They are high in fiber, and some suggest that they are actually negative calories. Don't quote me on that, but they are very low in calories, and really good for you! That's why they say, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away."
Believe it or not, salmon has appetite suppressing qualities. Not to mention all those omegas and healthy fats! It's actually the fats in salmon that keep hunger at bay.
Spicy foods, such as hot peppers, wasabi, hot sauce, etc. are known to control the appetite. So, eat your chili and sushi with wasabi!
Oddly enough, eating a hot bowl of healthy soup can curb your appetite. It's something to do with the heat. So, you might consider having a light minestrone or something like that as your first course at dinner time.
Of course, lastly, I have to tell you about water. I think everyone knows the benefits of drinking water. One thing that surprised me, though, was that sometimes when a person feels hungry, they might actually be thirsty. So, make sure you get at least your 8 glasses a day! I know, that sounds like a lot, but a glass of water is actually 8 oz, so most of us could easily drink 2 servings at a time.

Managing Morel Mushrooms

I don't know if I've ever mentioned it, but I loooove mushrooms! I love to eat them, I love to look at them, and I love to craft them! I've sculpted several to go along with fairy vignettes I've done.

One I've never done is the elusive morel. Morel mushrooms are quite a delicacy around here, and many other parts of the US. They are as delicious as they are unusual.

Well, I got it in my head that I wanted to sculpt morels. I figured it would be a fairly simple type of thing to work on, as I'm out of practice. I was, however, mistaken.

I suppose, if I'd started with a larger mushroom, I might not have had as much trouble. But, I didn't start large, I started small. The cap of the mushroom was less than one inch, because I thought they would make great earrings! Which they would. Trying to sculpt such small crevices, though, was not so great.

So, I doubled my clay, and tried it on a larger scale. It worked much better that way, although, I still had to be careful, else my crevices would collapse. Much like the coal mines that gave so many WV men mesothelioma, but I digress.

I asked my yahoo group, COC, about forming the holes on the smaller ones, and got several good ideas. So, I'll have to play around, and see what works. I'll let you know what I come up with!

Back in the Habit

For many years, I worked almost constantly on my artwork. When my back started bothering me so bad, I got out of the habit, and it's been a couple years or so since I worked on much of anything. I've missed it so much, and really want to get back to it.

One thing that was a blessing to me, and that I really loved was being part of a group on yahoo for polymer clay called City-O-Clay. It is run by a lovely woman named Nora Jean, of norajean.com, and a wonderful bunch of volunteers, one of which, I used to be. As with my creating, my pain also kept me from joining in as much, and eventually I completely lost touch. I've missed them so much. Both my art and my group. So, I'm making a conscious effort to get back into doing them again.

After sending a hello message to the group, I was welcomed back with open arms, and told how much I was missed. Boy, that sure makes a person feel good!

Another thing I've restarted is being a Flybaby at Flylady.net. This is a site, with another wonderful lady, that helps you get your house in order, so you can, in turn, get your life in order. It's really pretty cool! They fight against CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome), by helping you learn new habits. I've begun my Baby Steps, and am excited to continue!

They say it comes in Threes

I've always heard that. Bad things come in threes. I always considered it an old wive's tale, but now I'm not so sure.

Last week we had three deaths happen close to us. Now, don't get all upset, because it wasn't my immediate family or anything. Not that we weren't saddened, but you know what I mean. It makes me appreciate our Blue Advantage insurance all the more. I hope my girls don't have to use it until they're very old, but at least I know they're taken care of.

The first was the elderly owner of my husband's company. He was a very good man, and always treated us very well. He passed on Saturday.

The second was Greg's Aunt. She was took care of children most of her life, and was loved by many people. Greg's Mom and her were very close. She passed on Sunday.

The third was my Uncle. He was 91 years old, and drove around and played the fiddle up until a day or two before his death. He was known and loved by many bluegrass and fiddle fans all through WV. He was also my Dad's last living, and eldest brother. They spoke nearly every day. I know Dad will miss him most of all. He passed on Monday.

Even though they were all elderly, it still makes you think. My favorite saying really holds true at times like this. The most important things in life aren't things.

Square Foot Garden Update

Box number one looks good, but compared to the other two, it's lagging behind a bit. If you remember from my other posts, this box got Walmart compost and peat from a local landscaping and gardening store. Since it seems to be lacking something, I allowed my hubby to put a little Miracle Grow on it when he watered. We'll see if that helps.

Box two is looking good, but my cauliflower doesn't seem to be doing anything other than make big leaves. Greg (the hubby) thinks I got them out too late in the season. He's probably right. Same thing with the peas. I decided to pull them up, cause they just weren't behaving like they should. The Cilantro and Parsley are going to town though! And on the other side of the fence....

My zucchini are doing great!!! We just pulled a few off today. They were a little on the small side, but that's what we wanted, so the skin would be more tender. The plants are just covered in blooms!!!

And, last but not least, the third box. My green beans! The package I bought said Blue Lake. I thought I was getting bush beans, but oddly, some of them seem to be vining. It's weird. It looks like bush and vine all mixed together. I'm not sure what to do about the vining ones. My father-in-law uses tall poles to make a tepee type structure for his to grow up, so I may try something like that. He always has wonderful success with his garden!

Our tomatos are in our regular garden, and that's what I'm most excited about. I can't wait to have some fried green tomatoes!!!!

Shopping is for the Dogs

Ok, so it's not REALLY for the dogs, but I was going for "witty". Humor me! LOL

I was looking around for something to trim your dogs nails, and I came across a pretty cool shopping site! It's called Shop Wiki.

I guess you'd called it a search engine for shopping. You can type in your item in the search bar, and it will crawl the net and find it on lots of different sites. Not just ones that have paid to be found. So, you can find the best deal!

I was looking for a grooming tool, and found several things to choose from. I also found some fun looking toys that Max would love! Sure, he'd have some of them chewed to bits in under 30 seconds, but he'd still love them! LOL

Of course, it's not only doggy items that can be found. For instance, I can find a wide variety of craft supplies, cute signs for my garden, or everything Sammy will need to go back to school, just to name a few.

I just love finding deals, and I'm sure you do, too! So, I thought you just might want to give it a try!

Playground Fun

We don't live in town, so we don't get to a playground very often, but not long ago we had a little extra time before an appointment, so we stopped by Sammy's favorite play place! It was extra fun for her, because she had a friend with her. Her bestest friend, no less. :-)

This one is behind a school in town, and has this great big castle/fort for the kids to play on. It's usually pretty quiet, too, so that's a plus.

Unfortunately, the playground doesn't hold much interest for me, although, I've been known to have a nice swing, now and then. LOL What did draw my interest, though, was the flowers they have planted around the playground. There wasn't a large variety, but I did get a few nice pictures of them! Learn to play by Ear

I have been wanting to learn to play the mandolin (that's my Dad and a friend playing at a past Folk Festival) and guitar for some time now, but I haven't succeeded yet. I've tried to learn using books and dvd's, but I found it difficult and somewhat boring. Playing the scales over and over is tiresome, and the notes don't seem to stick in my head very well.

Well, I was just browsing some random sites last night, and came across a really interesting site. It's called Mountain Music for Everyone! It is a small, family run business, with a really different way of teaching several stringed instruments. I haven't bought the book yet, but I'm seriously considering it. And I don't think I could explain their theory, so you really should go check out their site yourself. It just seems to make a lot of sense. The simplicity of it. And, they have received a lot of positive feedback, so it's working for a lot of people.

I have no affiliation with them, I just figured there might be some of you who'd had the same trouble I did. And this does look promising! Their few products are pretty inexpensive, so it wouldn't be a huge investment to try it. Plus, they do have a 30 day guarantee on some items, depending on what they are. If you go to the site, check out their sample videos and blog too! They seem like awfully nice people. :-)

Moving on to Jr. High

Today is a bittersweet day. This is my baby. She'll be 11 in August. In my mind and heart, she'll always be my baby, but today, she is having her very last day in grade school. She's gone there since Kindergarten. Next fall, she'll be going to a local Jr. High.

Up until this year, the grade schools were K through 6th grade, the Jr. High was 7th through 9th, and the High School was 10th through 12th. I don't know why they changed it, but they did a lot of construction on some schools, and kids bumped up to the next school this year. From what I hear, it is working out well, so that's good. I just hate the thought of my little (literally) girl going in amongst kids that are a lot bigger than her. Have you seen how big 7th and 8th graders are getting these days??? LOL Luckily, they keep the 6th graders mostly separate from the older kids, except for lunch and just once in a while. One of our neighbors went this year, and she's had a good experience with the change, so that makes me feel a little bit better. But still, it's a bit of a bittersweet day today.

I'll probably feel the same way when she gets ready to go to the High School. Maybe she'll have a growth spurt by then. LOL

She started Band this year, and plays the trumpet. She had the choice of Band or Choir for next year, and she chose to stick with Band. Kids used to be able to do both, but they changed it. It kind of upsets me, because I was in Choir for 8 years, and would liked to let her have that experience, but what can you do?

She will need to devote a lot of time to Band, though, so it might be for the best. Our High School has a really great Band, so I'm sure there will be a lot of practices and performances. I've known kids who were in the Band, and let me tell you, no other local school can hold a candle to them! I'm sure it will be a memorable experience for her. I know I have a lot of fond memories of my Choir days!

Garden News and UBP 2009 Prize

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by today! Some of you may have been wondering where my Square Foot Garden update is. Well, I had some pictures right after we got them built, but then I had some puter trouble, and had to do a full recovery on it, so I lost the pictures I had. I tried to get them uploaded somewhere before I did it, but it wouldn't work. So, I took some new pictures today! The only difference is, there are nice sized plants growing now! You can click on them to see the bigger version.

This is the first box. It's 4x4 feet, as they all are. I have a few herbs, some cabbages, and some bell peppers planted in it.

The last box has green beans. Blue Lake, to be specific. I didn't pay attention to my book when I planted them, and didn't get enough in it. So, I will be adding some more in the next few days. The book says you can make 16 holes in each square, and put 2 beans in each. I went by the bean package for spacing, and only put 6 in each square. So, I'll be able to get a LOT more beans in there! Yay!!!

Max tried to help when we were getting the boxes ready and things planted, but it turned out he wasn't as much help as he thought he'd be, so my hubby helped with a lot of it. He helped screw the boxes together and mix the soil. We did it on a tarp (as the book suggests), and it really did a nice job. I wouldn't have been able to do it by myself, though, as it was pretty heavy.

My hubby gave the boxes one dose of Miracle Grow. I didn't know about it until later, so I told him no more, as I want to see how they do on their own. Mel's Mix (the soil) should contain all the nutrients the plants need. That's part of the beauty of doing the Square Foot Gardening. You shouldn't need to fertilize, or use as much water, or space, of course. So, we'll see how it goes.

Square Foot Gardening

I'm sorry for not posting often lately. Between battling my arthritis because of the rainy weather, and trying to get stuff done when I'm not hurting, I just haven't been able to be here as often.

One thing I've been working on, is getting started with Square Foot Gardening. I've been wanting to try it for about a year or so, and finally got started! If you haven't heard of Square Foot Gardening, you really should get the book, called All New Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. You'd be amazed how much you can grow in such a tiny space.

Mel invented it, and has been practicing it since the 1970's, and has been all over the world, sharing this innovative way to garden with millions of people! Square Foot Gardening uses 80% less space than a normal row garden, and also requires no fertilizer, and a lot less water than normal gardens. You use 3 products to create the "perfect soil", which has all the nutrients your plants will need, plus, it drains well, and retains moisture, so your plants will be happy and healthy!

The book shares suggested ways to make your Square Foot Garden, but you don't have to build it exactly like that. You are free to use just about anything you like as your frame, and you can alter the shapes to your liking. The important thing to remember when building it, is make sure you can reach the middle without stepping on your soil. That's why you should build it no wider than 4 feet across. You can make them as small as one square foot, and as long as you like. You can use one box, or many boxes. You might even design them around your patio sets! Really, the only limit is your own imagination!

So far, I've got my frames built and painted. Next, I need to mix up my "Mel's Mix" soil, then the fun will really start! I will share pictures and news on my Square Foot Garden, as it goes along, but for now, here are a few examples of other's gardens.

One thing I love about the internet, is you can connect with people all over the world! Before I got online (about 12 years ago *yikes!*), I barely knew anyone. Being a homebody didn't help. That all changed, though, after I discovered chat rooms (those were the days), and groups for just about any interest you can imagine! Now, I can get to know people from anywhere! Parents in Peru, Crafters in Cancun, you get the idea. LOL

I was chatting with a friend in Australia not long ago. She is a dog lover, too! She has several other animals, too, but we were mainly talking about our dogs. Like ours, her dogs are totally spoiled! LOL

Who? Me???

Well, we got on the subject of pet stores and such, and she was telling me about the one she goes to. It's called Tails R Wagging. And, from the sound of it, they are wonderful! Not only do they have 2 local (to her) stores, but they also have an online presence. I wish we had places like that near us. Most of our pet stores leave a little bit to be desired.

They carry all sorts of products. Premium foods, medications, toys, clothes, bedding, and lots and lots more! Also, they have an excellent grooming area, and will even teach you how to groom your pet better. I know, I sure could use some help with that. It's not easy grooming a full grown German Shepherd! LOL

Another great part of the store is the kennel. The doggy day care Sydney provides boarding, pet sitting, dog walking and more. It's just crazy how much they do for the Aussie doggies! You can even log on to their website and view the webcam of your pet, while you're away. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Now, if your pet could see YOU on a webcam, it would be completely awesome!!!

Another great thing, is they have a forum on the site, so you can connect with them or other pet lovers! And, you know, it's true the world over, people love to talk about their pets! LOL

And, last but not least, they even sell puppies! They have several different breeds, depending on the week, but one they have is spoodles for sale. They are super cute! You'll also find Pugaliers, Moodles, Bichoodles, and even cavoodles for sale Sydney! If you live near Rozelle or Balmain, you should go check them out! I don't know if I'll ever make it to Australia, but if I were there with my pet, I'd be heading in their direction.

Cast Iron Crazy

Just a quick side note.... Thanks so much to all who visited my blog from the UBP! I haven't had a lot of spare time lately, but I plan on visiting all of you soon! Also, thanks to all my subscribers!

Ok, so let's talk about cast iron cookware! I have some! I love it! In my opinion, Lodge makes the very best!

I have one large skillet, two dutch ovens, and one reversible grill! I use my skillet almost every day! Nothing makes fried potatoes or cornbread like a cast iron skillet. Am I right?? Heck yeah!
Not that we eat them every day, I use it for anything that would be fried or sauted. But, unlike our forefathers (or foreMOTHERS), I use olive oil (one of the best diet supplements, in my opinion)almost exclusively to cook with.

The only bad thing about cast iron cookware, is getting and keeping that shiny, black, non-stick surface. It takes a bit of maintenance, but it's easy and doesn't take that long. I came across a great article about caring for your cast iron on Hobby Farms, in case you need to learn how to take care of yours! It's called Clean and Refurbish Cast Iron.

Really, my only problem with all my cast iron, is finding a good spot to store it. I usually keep it in my oven, but it's really too much weight. I think I may have my hubby find the 2x4's in the wall, and put up some strong hangers. Wouldn't my kitchen look so rustic, with all those skillets and things hanging around? LOL If you have any ideas about that, let me know!

No, unfortunately, I didn't "get my craft on". LOL But, I did dig out a few books I don't use anymore. I guess you could say I've advanced. Maybe. Sorta. Well, I've got it stuck in my head well enough, that I can kinda just do my own thing. So, that's good!

My Etsy store is called I Play with Dolls. And, I do plan on getting busy with some items to list, but at the moment, it's just some polymer clay books, and one knitting book.

I have listed two of Maureen Carlson's books, which were very helpful! I used them for several years, because they were a good reference for some basic sculpting skills. If you're thinking of trying your hand at making dolls or figures, I would recommend getting them! You'll find just about all the character sculpting info you could want!

I've got enough craft venues covered to get those little squirrels in your brain running fast enough to move up to treadmills! LOL Polymer clay books, one by Donna Kato, too, knitting, and rock painting! Lots of fun!

It's Spring!!! Woo hoo! Sorry, couldn't help myself. LOL I'm just so excited about it! Now, on to the topic at hand.

So many of us look for ways to earn money online. It's not easy to do, and it's also not easy to know who to trust. Well, I've discovered a really easy way to earn! Someone I subscribe to and trust actually earned enough to get a laptop on Amazon! How cool is that?

What do I have to do, you ask? Well, the easiest thing is to search. Yep! That's it. Just do your normal searches and earn! Now, a bit about me! I am a 40 year old mom of three girls, ages 20, 18, and 10. The 10 year old is the only one left at home now. I have been married to my husband for 11 years this past Groundhog's Day. He calls me his Groundhog Bride. How becoming. I love, love, love keeping up with all sorts of blogs! Other crafters/artists, moms, thrifty souls, gardeners, and more! I enjoy gardening when the weather permits, which here in WV is late Spring thru early Fall!

I have a lot of back pain, due to arthritis and disk issues. I had to have a major surgery (27 stitches) last summer, which helped some, but I still have arthritis issues. I'm sure a lot of my trouble is being too heavy, which I'm trying to remedy now, because I recently joined Weight Watchers! I'm actually enjoying it, too! The meetings really pick me up and get me motivated! I don't get out much, so it's a nice little social break for me! I will be updating my progress here from time to time.

I love hearing from my readers, although, I'll admit, sometimes I'm not so quick at responding. That's just due to life and the pain situation. But I really do love hearing from you! Do You Like Electronics?

I don't have a lot of electronics, although, I'd probably have more, if I could afford them. LOL An mp3 player might be nice, so I could download and listen to podcasts anywhere and anytime I wanted. One of those doohickeys that lets you get internet just about anywhere would be kinda cool, also! There's probably a lot more that would interest me, but I have a feeling I'm pretty clueless as to what's out there. LOL

I was just puttering around last night, and came across a fun page on Buy.com. It's got some weekly specials on electronics. There are things like adapters, which I think are meant to be used with memory cards like you use in a digital camera, if you don't have the right size. There's also a Kingston Flash Drive, an XBox Wireless Network Adapter, a Samsung Wireless Ear Set, and even a really nice looking laptop, and they are all on Sale! I just thought it might be something you'd want to check out!

I know I'll be keeping my eye on it. You never know what kind of deal you'll get if you keep your eyes open! I just never realized you could get such good deals on Buy.com, but I guess I was wrong. Whoda thunk it? LOL

It's been several days since I last posted. In the meantime, Sammy was off school, sick with bronchitis, then Greg was home from work for a couple days with bronchitis. Luckily, I haven't gotten it. Yay! Thanks to God for small favors!

I have been doing pretty well with Weight Watchers, although I missed last weeks meeting, with them home sick. But, I tell you what, it ain't easy being good with Girl Scout cookies in the house. Sammy is a Girl Scout, and sold 168 boxes this year. It's so hard to keep from eating them. I am perfectly fine if nothing like that is in the house, but if it is, watch out! LOL

Speaking of WW, I ran across a girl on YouTube today that started WW in January. Her name is Denean. Isn't that an unusual and pretty name? :-) She is doing great, so far, and is blogging about her journey. I think she said she goes to medical assistant training school, or nursing school. One or the other. LOL You should check her out. She seems to be a real sweetheart!

Let's see... I watched Coraline this weekend. It was so totally NOT what I was expecting. I pictured it being kinda weird and fun, like A Nightmare Before Christmas, but I was wrong. The commercials were really misleading, I think. Yes, it was weird. But it was weird in a dark and creepy way. Now, don't get me wrong, I love dark and creepy, but Coraline was even a bit much for me. LOL I really have no feeling to watch it again, which says a lot, cause I love to watch movies over and over.

I also saw Race to Witch Mountain, which was pretty good. Sammy wanted to see it, so I took her. I had a bit of a grudge about a remake being made, because I love the originals, but I have to admit I enjoyed it. I still would rather see the originals, but the kids of today will probably love it.

The last couple days have been pretty rough for me, with the rainy weather heading our way. Today was especially bad. I hurt and ached so bad, I just couldn't get anything accomplished. I had to really force myself to get dinner made, but it was good. Burrito nite. :-) I'm feeling a little better tonight, thank goodness. Tomorrow, I'm going to try to make it out to a WW meeting, and get a few things at Walmart. Yeah, cause our puppy, well, he likes to eat. LOL Even though he told me that cold burrito would be ok, if he absolutely HAD to, but I think we better stick with the dog food. ;-)

I was able to get caught up on my YouTube and Vloggerheads friends today! That was pretty fun! I haven't made a video in ages, but I like to go see what everyone else is up to. They keep telling me I need to make a new video, but I just can't seem to get myself into the idea. I feel so BLAH most of the time. I'm not sure what's up with that.

Anyhoo... I hope all of you are having a great day! I think I'll go catch up on some blog reading now!

WW Recipe - Chicken Mushroom Ragout

Since I joined Weight Watchers, I've been looking around for WW recipes that already have the nutritional info and points figured. I've found a few places that have them, so when I find something I like, I figured I'd share it with you!

Now, there's no need to give me a paternity test, because I openly admit these are not my own creations, and I'll give you the link to where I found them, in case you want to check out the site yourself!

Now this one is really yummy, but I'm crazy for mushrooms. LOL The great thing is, it's only 3 points per serving! This recipe could easily be doubled, if you have a large family, and I think it would do well if frozen. Let me know how you like this one, if you try it!

Chicken Mushroom Ragout

Serve this homey, full-flavored dish with a crusty loaf of
bread and a fresh green salad.

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients

1 14 1/2 ounce can reduced-sodium chicken broth
1 tablespoon horseradish mustard
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 sprigs fresh thyme or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-size pieces (12 ounces total)
8 ounces fresh mushrooms, halved (3 cups)
1 cup sliced carrots
1 cup sliced leeks
1 cup water
2 tablespoons cornstarch

In a large saucepan or Dutch oven combine chicken broth, mustard, thyme, and
pepper. Stir in chicken, mushrooms, carrots, and leeks. Bring to boiling.
Reduce heat; cover and simmer 15 minutes. Remove thyme sprigs,
if using. Combine water and cornstarch. Stir in chicken mixture. Cook
and stir till thickened and bubbly. Cook and stir for 2 minutes more. Serve in bowls.

POINTS: 3

PER SERVING: 154 Calories, 5 g Total Fat, 1 g Saturated Fat,
41 mg Cholesterol, 285 mg Sodium, 13 Total Carbohydrate,
3 g Dietary Fiber, 15 g Protein

Max the Puppy

This is Max, our 1 1/2 year old German Shepherd! Isn't he pretty? Er, I mean handsome!!! Max was being so cute. Sammy was scratching his belly, and I thought "What a perfect photo op", but he had different ideas.

You see, Max has this thing about chasing, eating, killing light/shadows on the floor/wall/ceiling. It's really funny when my hubby gets out the laser light! Max would chase that thing all day, if you let him. But he also knows that Mom's camera makes the light come.

So, no matter how quietly and secretly I try to turn my camera on, he always hears it, and immediately jumps up to chase the light. So, I can never get the pic of him that I intended. I wanted to get a cute photo of Sammy scratching his belly, but I'm afraid it's just not gonna happen.

So, I figured, alright, I'll go with it, and get yet another picture of him... but he absolutely wouldn't look at me.

The only way I could even get his face, was to hold the camera almost on the floor and snap it quickly. So, this is the best I can get of him getting his belly scratched. LOL

I haven't had much of a chance to come tell y'all what's been going on for the last week or so. Better late than never, so they say. LOL

Well, I told you I was thinking of joining Weight Watchers. I didn't get to go the week I told you, because Sammy was very sick for a few days, and I didn't want to drag her to a boring meeting when she wasn't feeling well. So, I finally made it there last Monday. First, I sat in on a meeting, cause you can do that once before joining, and when it was over, I joined! Right now, they are having a free registration, so I only had to pay the weekly $12. Cool huh??

I've been following the program for 1 week, as of today. I think I'm doing pretty well. I had to work mostly with the groceries I already had in the house, which was a bit tricky, but it wasn't too bad. I didn't lose any weight when I went to the meeting yesterday, but they say that's pretty normal. In fact, they say that we shouldn't pay much attention to our weight for the first 3 weeks or so, because it usually takes that long to get your body adjusted and losing. So, I'm not going to get upset about it. I will just keep at it, and I know I will lose weight!

It's really a pretty simple to follow plan, and if you are thinking of joining, well, I'd recommend it! Shoot, even my doctor told me they have the highest success rate of the diet programs out there, so that really made me feel confident about it!

As I said, Sammy was sick. She had a sinus infection and a touch of bronchitis. I kept her home Thursday and Friday of one week, and she didn't go back to school till the next Wednesday. Poor little thing. The doctor gave her antibiotics and an inhaler, because it hurt when she breathed, but also we think she may have a touch of asthma. I'm glad he gave it to her, because she could tell that her chest felt better within a couple minutes! She gets sick a lot more often for some reason. My two older girls hardly ever got sick. I was very blessed! Not that I'm not blessed with all of them anyway! Geesh! Don't look at me like that! LOL

The Girl Scout cookies came this weekend, so we have to go through all of them and sort them out. I find it easier to put each order in a grocery bag and write the name and amount owed on the outside, before we ever start delivering. It makes the delivery process sooo much easier! And easy is GOOD! LOL

Greg (the hubby) has been working hard the last couple weeks. He's been in the shop working on trucks/trailers more than usual. He got called out Friday night to drive somewhere and fix a truck along the road, and has driven both days this week. Technically, he's a diesel mechanic, but he has his CDL's so he can help the company when they are low on drivers for whatever reason. It's not unusual for him to work 50 to 60 hours a week. Anytime something needs done, he gets it done. It doesn't matter how long he has to stay. That's one thing I really admire about him. He has a very strong work ethic. He's definitely NOT a deadbeat dad! (We won't discuss anyone who IS) ;-)

My new Polymer Cafe magazine came today! Woo hoo! There are only two times I'm usually happy about going to the mailbox, and that's when my two craft magazines come! LOL What can I say? I'm easy to please! This edition of Polymer Cafe has some great articles, and even better photos in it!! The Lantern Beads by Sophia Lenz are just beautiful! And Christi Friesen wrote a great article called Nudge Your Creativity. It talks about using little stories you create to get your fingers in the mood! LOL Plus, the Mixed Media Challenge Winners are listed, and whew! are they amazing! I love the challenges, because you get to see how several different people percieve the subject. One of these days, I want to join a challenge, but I haven't seen the "right" one yet. ;-)

Barbie Banned in WV???

Barbie could get an unwelcome present for her 50th birthday: outlawed in West Virginia.
A state lawmaker proposed a bill Tuesday to ban sales of the iconic Mattel doll and others like her.
The proposal from Democratic Delegate Jeff Eldridge says such toys influence girls to place too much importance on physical beauty, at the expense of their intellectual and emotional development.
A Mattel spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday. The Barbie doll officially turns 50 on March 9, and the toy maker has made big plans this year to mark the anniversary.
Barbie has had her foes over that half-century. Critics say the doll promotes materialism and an unnatural body image.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this. It's true, Barbie dolls only have one body type, but then again, so do all dolls. I mean, you don't see Obese Strawberry Shortcake dolls, or Blind Bratz. How about Wheelchair G.I. Joe? LOL

No, the world sees a certain type of beauty. Really though, the kids are getting far worse signals than what Barbie might put out. Have you looked in a magazine or watched tv lately? Even the diet commercials give the impression that we are supposed to be svelt. And how many chubby kids do you see on all the popular kids shows??? Hmmmm???

I think it might not be as productive to remove Barbie, as it would be to show more "natural body image" toys, tv shows, etc. If not, someday, we might even lose baby bedding for having unnatural images. Well, Pooh bear and the Precious Moments kids aren't "natural", are they? LOL Ok, I don't really see that happening, but I do think PROMOTING body types other than the "perfect" ones is a good idea.

How about someone coming up with a totally new doll line? One that look like REALLY NORMAL people. Not perfect. Not drop dead gorgeous. Average Joe. Make them doing real jobs, or being moms, or being a preacher, or a farmer. Some thin, some chubby. Some tall, some short. Some with disabilities. Those are real people. I think MY daughter would love dolls like that!

Now, I do think Delegate Eldridge means well. It's a hard topic to make decisions about. I just hope the right one is made.

West Virginia Gets New Area Code

With the coming of the new year, Verizon Communications is reminding residents the time is coming when West Virginians will have to dial 10 digits on any local phone number.

Verizon Communications is urging people to start dialing 10-digit phone numbers on all their local calls so they're used to the change when it becomes mandatory Feb. 28, said Harry J. Mitchell, director of media relations for Verizon's Mid-Atlantic and South-Central Regions.

"In making a New Year's resolution, this is one you can keep," he said.

On Feb. 28, West Virginia will add the 681 area code to the same geographic region as the 304 area code.

Instead of splitting the state into two separate regions with a new area code assigned to each one, the state Public Service Commission - with the urging of Verizon, business and state leaders - opted for the overlay plan instead.

Under the overlay, all new numbers will be assigned the new area code regardless of location. People will then be required to dial the area code plus the number on all local calls.

Many people are already used to dialing 10-digit numbers daily on their cell phones, company officials said of the expected ease of the changeover.

To prepare West Virginians for the new area code and local dialing change, a permissive dialing period began in July and will end Feb. 27. During this time, local calls could be made by dialing either seven or 10 digits.

"With the beginning of the new year, we want people to get into the habit of dialing the 10-digit number," Mitchell said. "When (Feb. 28) rolls around, if they dial the old 7-digit number, they will find their calls will not be completed."

The PSC had reversed a decision made earlier this year about assigning the new area code in 28 northern and eastern counties and decided to issue the state's second area code to new telephone customers. The decision came after the commission heard from a number of business leaders around the state about the negative impact the change would have on their operations, having to change letterhead and other corporate communications that would make it harder for their established customers to locate them to continue to do business.

The change to 10-digit dialing will not affect the price of a call or local call coverage areas. A local call that now uses seven digits will still be a local call when 10 digits required. And the 911 emergency number will not change.

Verizon has had a number of initiatives to get the word out over the past few months. A reminder will be included in customers' January bills.

"Now we are trying to keep the drumbeat going," Mitchell said. "It is all about practice."

People also need to be reminded of the changeover so they will have time to reprogram their autodialers, voice-mail numbers and fax machines, he said. Company officials said life-safety systems, Internet dial-up numbers, security systems and gates and call-forwarding settings as well as businesses' private branch exchange equipment will also need to be programmed for 10-digit dialing.

Once mandatory 10-digit local dialing begins Feb. 28, callers must use the 10 digits for all local calls. Otherwise, calls will not be completed and callers will get a recording instructing them to hang up and dial again.

"There will be a quick learning curve once those messages start," Mitchell said.

Weight Watchers?

I don't even try to do New Year's Resolutions. Not anymore. In spite of the stubborn streak that I sometimes have, I, unfortunately, seem to have very little will power. I've tried different diets over the years, but I usually go it alone, and only make it a few days or so. What's worse, when I tried a low carb diet last year, I actually gained weight. I thought I was doing it right, but, apparently, I wasn't. So, I have even more surplus pounds to shed. Like, 100 of them. Yikes!!!

So, I've been thinking, maybe if I get some real, face to face people to connect with, I'll be able to do better. I've tried using the online sites, but they just don't seem to be that helpful to me. Maybe having real people will make me feel more accountable.

That's why I'm thinking of checking out Weight Watchers. They are having a free registration period right now, so it wouldn't be very expensive at all. And the meeting dues are only $12 a week here in my area. That's not bad at all. There are a few places right around here that I can go to, so I have lots of options for meeting times. The one I'd really like to go to only has "express" meetings, though, so I'm not sure I'll do my first meeting there. It might be a better idea to go to the main office, where they have regular length meetings, so I can get a real feel for how it works. It's not that far of a drive, especially since it's once a week. And, it's not like I drive around a lot, so I can afford one trip extra.

So, please say a prayer for me, and I'll let you know what happens!

The Dough that Died

Well, maybe I should say it was murdered. Yes, it was all my fault. I should be arrested for neglect. I'm so sorry to anyone who was watching my progress. Although, I have a good reason.

My little girl was sick, and home for a few days, so I got off track. That's how it goes. I don't have much of a routine, to speak of, but when it's changed, it throws me for a loop. I should have tracked my time with a Jaeger Master, but dang it, I don't have one.

You will be happy to know, however, that once she was feeling better, I started a new sourdough starter, and it's working even better than the first one! I haven't had the gumption to take photos this time, but it's developing a brown liquid with a froth on top, and it smells kind of like beer, so that's a good thing! I hope to make some bread in the next couple days!

Just Call Me Mrs. Smarty Pants!

Ok, I'm no brainiac, I admit it. You know it, I know it, shoot, even the dog knows it. LOL But every once in a while, even I am capable of ingenuity!

Like they say, necessity is the mother of invention! Well, I may not have invented something, but I did make it out of something I had, instead of going to the store and buying one. So, yay me!!!

Here's the story. I wanted to make a clay bunny, again, but I wasn't comfortable with doing it out of my head, and I have a book that shows you how, so I was going to use it. The problem was, I didn't have room on my desk for it to lay flat, and it wouldn't stand (or lean) on it's own, without falling down.

I needed some way to make it stand up. I've seen book holders before in pictures. Usually, they are advertised to hold up your cookbook while you're fixing a recipe. I really didn't want to wait to go buy one somewhere. That is, if I could even find one. I wanted it NOW!

So, I decided to make my own! And here's what I used... get your pen and paper handy to write down all the tools and materials I used.

That's ok.... I'll wait.....

*humming to myself*

Ok.... got it? Here is the list:

1 coat hanger

What??? No, that's really it! LOL

I used one wire coat hanger, and my hands, and made a book holder! Check out the pictures!

I just bent and fiddled with it till it would hold the book, without falling over. Note, it has both front and rear contact points (the bend in front, and the bend holding the book), plus, I used the hanger part in the rear as a stabilizer. It might be almost as neat as this pantry moth trap, what do you think? Both are pretty darn nifty, if you ask me! But I'm partial. LOL

Sourdough Starter - Day 5

Things are coming along as expected. Just added 1 cup each of flour and water again. Some people have theirs turn out on the runny side, and add less water, so it will get thicker. Mine has been thick from the start. I don't know why. I've been following the same directions. LOL Oh well.

I'm getting more and more excited to actually make my sourdough bread! Hopefully, only a couple more days or so!

Sourdough Starter - Days 3 and 4

Hey there! I'm sorry I didn't get these photos posted on the right days. You know how it is, some days you just can't get everything done that you want to. :-)

So, here is Day 3's photos.

I know, the jar looks cruddy. Sorry for it's appearance. It's from where I stirred it all up inside the jar. But, things are going good. It was so nice and bubbly! There wasn't much of the brown liquid at all, but it's starting to get the sour smell, like it's supposed to. It seems to be progressing about the same as my new friend, Laura at Heavenly Homemakers!

Here, looking down in the jar, you can see how frothy it is! I added another cup of flour and water, and stuck it back on top of the fridge to "cook"!

Now for Day 4!

Well, the jar looks awful, so I did change it out to a big ceramic bowl. But, look at all the liquid that has formed! Looks kinda yucky, but I know it's doing what it's supposed to! I poured the liquid off, and transfered it to the bowl, then added more flour and water. Again, I compared my progress with that of Laura's Day 4.

There! That looks better, doesn't it? I could hear all the little yeasty critters cheering! LOL I left it in this bowl, covered it with cheesecloth (as with all the other days), and stuck it back on top of the fridge. Just a side note, this bowl was a gift from my Mother-in-law, which she got from my Sister-in-law, who sold Southern Living at the time. In fact, she was one of the top sellers in the whole country! Go Mary!

It's not picture taking time for today, but there is less froth forming, and from checking with Laura's blog, it is absolutely normal, so I'm not going to get worried that things aren't going right. Even though my first attempt was a flop, this one has gone just as it was supposed to! I'm so excited! I think it might be because I used whole wheat flour this time, as she suggested. The first time, I used regular white flour, so there would have been a lot less natural yeast in the flour itself. So, even though my first was in summer (warmer), and this batch is in the dead of winter, it's doing sooo much better!

I will try to get today's photos here tonight or in the morning! For now, I'm going to go play with some clay! I have got an itch to create some more bunnies! I'll post photos of them, too!

10 Blog Traffic Tips

In every bloggers life comes a special day - the day they first launch a new blog. Now unless you went out and purchased someone else''s blog chances are your blog launched with only one very loyal reader - you. Maybe a few days later you received a few hits when you told your sister, father, girlfriend and best friend about your new blog but that''s about as far you went when it comes to finding readers.

Here are the top 10 techniques new bloggers can use to find readers. These are tips specifically for new bloggers, those people who have next-to-no audience at the moment and want to get the ball rolling.

It helps if you work on this list from top to bottom as each technique builds on the previous step to help you create momentum. Eventually once you establish enough momentum you gain what is called "traction", which is a large enough audience base (about 500 readers a day is good) that you no longer have to work too hard on finding new readers. Instead your current loyal readers do the work for you through word of mouth.

Top 10 Tips

10. Write at least five major "pillar" articles. A pillar article is a tutorial style article aimed to teach your audience something. Generally they are longer than 500 words and have lots of very practical tips or advice. This article you are currently reading could be considered a pillar article since it is very practical and a good "how-to" lesson. This style of article has long term appeal, stays current (it isn’t news or time dependent) and offers real value and insight. The more pillars you have on your blog the better.

9. Write one new blog post per day minimum. Not every post has to be a pillar, but you should work on getting those five pillars done at the same time as you keep your blog fresh with a daily news or short article style post. The important thing here is to demonstrate to first time visitors that your blog is updated all the time so they feel that if they come back tomorrow they will likely find something new. This causes them to bookmark your site or subscribe to your blog feed.

You don''t have to produce one post per day all the time but it is important you do when your blog is brand new. Once you get traction you still need to keep the fresh content coming but your loyal audience will be more forgiving if you slow down to a few per week instead. The first few months are critical so the more content you can produce at this time the better.

8. Use a proper domain name. If you are serious about blogging be serious about what you call your blog. In order for people to easily spread the word about your blog you need a easily rememberable domain name. People often talk about blogs they like when they are speaking to friends in the real world (that''s the offline world, you remember that place right?) so you need to make it easy for them to spread the word and pass on your URL. Try and get a .com if you can and focus on small easy to remember domains rather than worry about having the correct keywords (of course if you can get great keywords and easy to remember then you’ve done a good job!).

7. Start commenting on other blogs. Once you have your pillar articles and your daily fresh smaller articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world. One of the best ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people’s blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.

Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific commentor and always have something valuable to say then people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.

6. Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts. A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger''s article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry - it''s sort of like your blog telling someone else’s blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.

This is a good technique because like leaving comments a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important - it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will likely come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.

5. Encourage comments on your own blog. One of the most powerful ways to convince someone to become a loyal reader is to show there are other loyal readers already following your work. If they see people commenting on your blog then they infer that your content must be good since you have readers so they should stick around and see what all the fuss is about. To encourage comments you can simply pose a question in a blog post. Be sure to always respond to comments as well so you can keep the conversation going.

4. Submit your latest pillar article to a blog carnival. A blog carnival is a post in a blog that summarizes a collection of articles from many different blogs on a specific topic. The idea is to collect some of the best content on a topic in a given week. Often many other blogs link back to a carnival host and as such the people that have articles featured in the carnival often enjoy a spike in new readers.

To find the right blog carnival for your blog, do a search at blogcarnival.com.

3. Submit your blog to blogtopsites.com. To be honest this tip is not going to bring in a flood of new readers but it''s so easy to do and only takes five minutes so it''s worth the effort. Go to Blog Top Sites, find the appropriate category for your blog and submit it. You have to copy and paste a couple of lines of code on to your blog so you can rank and then sit back and watch the traffic come in. You will probably only get 1-10 incoming readers per day with this technique but over time it can build up as you climb the rankings. It all helps!

2. Submit your articles to EzineArticles.com. This is another tip that doesn’t bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it''s worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have - your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.

How you benefit is through what is called your "Resource Box". You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.

1. Write more pillar articles. Everything you do above will help you to find blog readers however all of the techniques I’ve listed only work when you have strong pillars in place. Without them if you do everything above you may bring in readers but they won’t stay or bother to come back. Aim for one solid pillar article per week and by the end of the year you will have a database of over 50 fantastic feature articles that will work hard for you to bring in more and more readers.

I hope you enjoyed my list of traffic tips. Everything listed above are techniques I’ve put into place myself for my blogs and have worked for me, however it''s certainly not a comprehensive list. There are many more things you can do. Finding readers is all about testing to see what works best for you and your audience and I have no doubt if you put your mind to it you will find a balance that works for you.

Art... In Ice?

Every once in a while, our freezer produces an unusual occurrence. By some strange act of nature, we are graced with these odd little ice sculptures.

See? In this first picture, cubes 2 and 4 each have a little thing shooting up out of it. It's as if an ice flower were growing, and these were the stems. They are not always pointing straight up, but they are always straight, never curves or ellipticals.

You can see it much better in this picture. This has got to be one of THE strangest things I have ever seen happen naturally. I would love it, if someone could explain to me HOW this happens.

Is there some sort of internal explosion that happens? Is there an ice magnet in the top of my freezer? Is the ice, perhaps, reaching for something more in life?

I know there are things in nature that I couldn't even begin to explain, but I've seen them all my life, in books or on tv. This is something I've never seen before, until just recently. It's a totally new phenomena for me. How about you? Have you ever seen this before?

Favorite Childhood Book!

LOL Can you believe that kid is 4 days younger than me??? Geesh!). I couldn't remember all of it , or even the name, but I remembered a little girl with a play house that had yellow curtains.

Well, I started looking online, because.... well, you can find ANYTHING online! LOL And I found it!

Oh what memories it brings back! It's like I found a long, lost security blanket, or something. LOL

Laurie and the Yellow Curtains (Wonder Books Easy Readers)

It was written by Sara Asheron, and illustrated by Isabel Dawson. It was published in 1962. Here is the blurb about it: "When Mr. Bill built a doghouse for Mrs. Brown's new dog & then a henhouse for Mr. Lee's chickens, Laurie wanted him to make a house with a yellow door & yellow curtains but he won't. At the end she gets a surprise."

It is such a sweet little story, and I'm so excited I finally found it! Isn't it funny the things we hold dear?

Exciting Competition for Ebay

I just heard of a new site that is, possibly, going to take Ebay's place as top online market.

It's called Bonanzle, and it's a selling and social site mixed into one! I first heard about it on Mashable, and then checked it out for myself. It looks like it's doing pretty good so far, because at only 4 months, it's already had one million items listed! Not bad, huh?

Not that I will ever pass up Sferra for my linens, because the quality is amazing, but this site has some very helpful features for sellers.

For instance, when a buyer views one of your items, they also see up to eight. That means you sell more! Buyers can offer a price on a group of your items, and you can wheel and deal! You can chat live with the buyer/seller, or just other members you want to talk to! Posting is easy, with one page and only five fields. That means, no waiting for pages to reload. Plus, you can import from Ebay or Craigslist. And these are just a few of the reasons it's had such a successful start! (Did I mention it's free, unless you're a Power Seller?)

I don't know about you, but I'm going to check it out!

Sourdough Starter - Day 2

Well, it's Day 2 of my Sourdough Starter project, and boy, wait till you see! Because I used a quart jar, instead of a larger jar, my dough became The Froth That Oozed. LOL Check it out!

And this happened in the last few hours. It was ok at dinner time (yeah I'm a night owl, and started my starter at night LOL), but by 9 pm it was trying to escape! I could literally see it moving and rolling down the side. It was kinda cool, actually. LOL

I decided to go ahead and switch to my gallon jar. Since I had to add another cup each of flour and water, I figured it would be smart of me. Good thing I've got this great head on my shoulders, right??? LOL Doy!!!

Ok, the new flour and water has gone in the gallon jar, along with the other starter. Got plenty of room to grow, my weird little critter!

All stirred up, and fresh cheesecloth on! And, back up on the fridge it went. We'll be back tomorrow with the newest installment!

Making Sourdough Starter Day 1

I've been wanting to make a sourdough starter for quite a while. I tried it a few months ago, but it didn't turn out right. But I have been following one of my fellow bloggers in her attempt at it, and decided to give it another try. She documented the whole process for her readers, and I plan to, also! If you'd like to check out hers, go to Heavenly Homemakers. Thanks so much for sharing, and making such a great blog for us Laura!

Like Laura, I gathered my ingredients and tools together.

I used 2 cups of King Arthur Whole Wheat flour, and 2 cups cold water. I mixed these together in my quart jar. I planned on using the long wooden spatula to stir it, but the fit was too tight, so I used a butter knife, instead.

I tried to get all the lumps out, but I had a few small ones that were being difficult, so I just left them alone. We'll find out if they make any difference in my starter. As you can see, it came out very thick, and almost looked like a really thick milkshake. Did yours look like this? I'd love to have comments from other sourdough makers, or those wanting to try it. Feedback is a wonderful thing, and it's been so quiet around here. *hint hint* ;-)

Here it is, all stirred up, and ready for the cheesecloth. My jar was about 3/4 full. It looks about as tempting as a bunch of ground up weight loss supplements. LOL

Ok, I wasn't real sure about the cheesecloth. It comes in the package all folded up, so I unfolded it, and used only one layer. Is that the right way to do it? I didn't have any rubber bands, so I used yarn, but really, I could have just used a jar ring without a lid. Although, I will be using a gallon pickle jar later on, and wouldn't be able to use a ring for that, so the yarn will do just fine!

When it's ready, you're supposed to put it in the warmest spot in your house. I think the top of the fridge is that spot for me. Thank goodness I'm not taller, or you'd see the dust that's probably up there. LOL

That's Day 1 started, so now we just have to wait. I'll look at it in 24 hours, and let you know what it looks like!

Blogs I Follow

I'm all the time finding new blogs that I want to follow, but I do have a few absolute favorites. Usually, they are by crafters or artists, but sometimes I just happen across one that didn't really fall into my search criteria. Sometimes they will be about cooking, mom life, or gardening. And, once in a while, they are pretty random. But they all have lots of personality and a friendly atmosphere!

The first one I'd like to share today is called Heavenly Homemakers. It's run by a very sweet lady named Laura. She has 4 kids, and has become very interested in feeding her family natural foods. A lot of her posts are menu plans, which sometimes also point to her recipes for certain items. They sound so good, you almost need to pop a couple diet pills before even reading them! LOL She also home schools her boys, and quite often discusses how things are going with that. I think almost anyone would enjoy her blog.

Another of my favorites probably falls under the random category, but that makes it no less wonderful. It is called Skeet's Stuff, and is run by a lady who calls herself Skeeterbess. She lives in Hawaii, and quite often posts about things that are going on locally. My favorite part of her blog is her Tuesday Teasers. She posts a small portion of a photo, and readers try to guess what it is. It's really quite hard, because she's really good at picking the right part of the object to make it really tricky. LOL It's a lot of fun, though, so do check her out!

The last one today is actually a podcast, but has so much great info, I had to list it! It's called WAHM Talk Radio. It's founder and host is a super sweet lady named Kelly McCausey. She started out just a regular mom, like the rest of us, and has educated herself and really built a great business around herself. She's really and inspiration to me. The show always has a fellow WAHM guest, whom she interviews and chats with. She also has a blog, so do check them both out!

Aspartame Toxicity

I've heard a few things now and then about possible problems with people consuming aspartame. I had never really done any research on the subject, but I saw something on Twittermoms.com tonight that urged me to check into it. I came across a site that explains a lot. It has stories from people who have had moderate to very severe problems that were alleviated by discontinuing the use of aspartame. In fact, I suffer from several of the problems that are commonly reported.

This just in.... the former National Polymer Clay Guild (now IPCA) is having their very first retreat this summer! How exciting is that!!?

It's going to be held at the Hilton Chicago Indian Lakes Resort in Bloomingdale, IL, July 11 - 15.

Pumpkin Muffin Recipe

I just tried this recipe for Pumpkin Muffins, and I wanted to share it with ya! I have a feeling you'll agree with me, that they're better than chocolate, better than cheap auto insurance, better than SEX!!! LOL

I got this from Recipezaar. It is my absolute favorite recipe website! It has loads of recipes, and people rate them after they've made them, so you have a pretty good idea if you'll like it or not. You also can save them to your own cookbook, print them, and even alter the amounts for the servings you need!

Actually, this recipe is for Pumpkin Bread, but it makes delicious muffins! If you love pumpkin, I know you'll like this recipe. You could also make it more diet-friendly by using Splenda instead of sugar, and applesauce instead of vegetable oil. Either way, it's pure heaven! I also would like to try adding some oats. I don't know, it just sounds like it would be good. LOL

Game - Katamari Damacy

I'd like to tell you a little bit about a game that I actually like. Unlike most console games (i.e. PS2, XBox, Wii, etc.) it has no violence, and is suitable for adults, as well as children. I haven't seen many games that fit that description.

This particular game is called Katamari Damacy. There are several Katamari games, but this is the one I've played.

The premise is simple, when the King of All Cosmos accidentally destroys all the stars in the sky, he orders his princely son to put the twinkle back in the heavens above.

The little prince then proceeds through different worlds rolling a ball. This ball collects things that are in the world. When it rolls over them, they stick to it, and the ball keeps growing. You never know what you might pick up.

You start out by picking up small things, such as cookies, kabobs, maybe even talking watches. As your ball grows larger, you can pick up larger items, such as lawn mowers, people, bull dozers, even ferris wheels!

It's really quite silly, but it's also very addicting! If you can't stand all the games with violence, and other "mature content", then you might want to try Katamari Damacy, or one of it's siblings.

When you go to the website, there is a little circle with links you can click. If you click the one called Presents, you will find a couple games, and one is an online version of Katamari Damacy. It's really not quite the same as the console version, but it will give you a little bit of a feel for how you collect things. Of course, the console version is more like you're walking around in these worlds, where as the online version just has you moving about a little square.

Find Friends

If you have the internet, it's not too hard to believe you've researched one or more of your hobbies or interests. Have you ever wished you could find other people with similar interests? I know, sometimes it seems like a daunting task.

After years of trying different things, some worked some didn't, I have found one that I really like. And, it's so simple, it's not even funny!

Blogs! Yep, you heard me right. All I have to do is a blog search on Google for the interest of my choice. No doubt, there will be a few. So, there's one possible new friend. The part that I really like though, is when bloggers use what is called a Blogroll. This is a list of blogs they like. And it's very likely those blogs will be about the same interest.

So, when I find a Blogroll on a blog I've enjoyed, I start blog surfing! I've found so many nice people that way!

Of course, this is just one way. There are other great ways to meet like minded folks! What is your favorite way?

Doll Tutorial - Armatures

As some of you may know, I love art dolls, and enjoy making them myself. I use polymer clay and other mixed media. Some are all clay, and some have soft bodies.

I've learned a lot from a lot of different places, but one thing that holds true, is dolls need armatures. There are many ways to make them. Some use foam, some use aluminum foil, and some use wire, just to name a few. I tend to use a mix of foil and wire.

Right now, I'm making a doll for my hubby's Granny for Christmas, and I used this mixture. I hadn't made a soft bodied doll before, though, so I wanted to get some ideas of how to form the armature. They can sometimes be hard to find, but I didn't have to make any travel deals to get these. Luckily, I typed in the right words and found The Magic Bean's blog! She has a very good article that points us to a couple really helpful tutorials. I used one of them for the doll I mentioned above. You can see the progress I've made so far on that page.

Christmas Recipes

With only a few days left till Christmas, I've been looking through my recipe box for all those tasty treats I want to fix for the family. With Santa and toys probably the number one things people think of, I'd say the second has to be all the wonderful food we have when people get together. I don't care if you're in Parkersburg or Vegas, people love to indulge at this time of year. So, hear are a few of my favorite recipes for you to try!

Eggnog

12 egg yolks
5 cloves, whole
4 cups milk
4 cups cream
3 cups light rum
1-3/4 cups sugar
2-1/2 teaspoons vanilla essence
1 teaspoon cinnamon, ground
3/4 teaspoon nutmeg, ground

In a saucepan over low heat, blend the milk, cinnamon, cloves and half a teaspoon of the vanilla essence. Keep stirring while mixture heats, and remove from heat just before boiling point.

In a bowl, mix together the sugar with all those egg yolks. Make sure you whisk them well so that they're light and fluffy. Gently and a little at a time, pour in the milk mixture while continuing to whisk.

Transfer mixture back into your saucepan over a medium heat while continuing to stir. Keep stirring until your eggnog mixture starts to resemble custard. Never let the mixture reach the boiling point.

Pour and strain the mixture into a jug, making sure to remove the cloves. Stand jug in the fridge for an hour or two. Gently stir in the cream, light rum, remaining vanilla and ground nutmeg.

Put back into the fridge overnight. Serve in cups with a little extra ground nutmeg, cinnamon or baking cocoa sprinkled lightly on top.

Gingerbread Cookies

2/3 cup packed light brown sugar
2/3 cup dark corn syrup
1 teaspoon ginger
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
2/3 cup butter
1 egg
4 cups flours

DIRECTIONS

1. Put sugar, syrup, spices and salt in a large saucepan ( mix cookies in saucepan) bring to a boil.
2. Add soda and butter; stir until butter melts.
3. Quickly stir in egg, then add flour, mix well.
4. Chill until firm enough to roll, then roll on lightly floured surface to about 1/4" thickness.
5. Cut in shapes.
6. Bake on parchment paper in preheated 325 degrees F. oven about 15 mins.
7. Cool on racks.
8. Decorate with frosting, using pastry tube with fine point.
9. Makes about 36 five inch cookies.

Frosting

1 egg white
1 cup plus 2 to 3 Tablespoons powdered sugar

In a small bowl of mixer, beat the above until smooth enough to squeeze through a pastry tube for decorating ** add more powdered sugar if necessary.

Roasted New Potatoes

1 1/2 pounds small new potatoes (scrubbed)
3 cloves garlic (thinly sliced)
2 tablespoons olive oil or canola oil
1/2 teaspoon crumbled rosemary (optional)

Because most of their nutrients are directly beneath the skin, don't peel new potatoes. Just scrub and cook.

Makes 8 servings.

Directions

Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a large bowl, combine the potatoes with the garlic, oil, and rosemary, if using.

Transfer to a roasting pan and roast about 45 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

Of course, I'm speaking of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! That Chuck Jones classic Christmas special. It just wouldn't be Christmas without it, in my book. How about you?

Released December 18, 1966, How the Grinch Stole Christmas is a story of a grumpy hermit that tries to steal Christmas from the good people of Whoville.

After almost succeeding, he has a change of heart when he realized that love was what made the Who's happy on Christmas.

Of course, the kids of today like the movie with Jim Carey, but for me, there is nothing like the original. But I love all the Dr. Seuss shows, too! I told you I'm a big kid! LOL

Christmas Specials

Image via WikipediaBeing a big kid at heart, I am still in love with everything I loved as a child. I still play with dolls, but, of course, now I'm making them. I wish they made adult size Inchworm ride on toys. And, I giggle like a goofball at my Muppet Show collection.

But, one of my favorite things, even all year long, are the tv Christmas Specials of my youth. Of course, there is the Charlie Brown Christmas, with their pitiful little tree. But my real passion lies in all of the Rankin Bass shows.

Who could resist Rudolph? By the way, you can click this photo to get it as wallpaper!

But Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer is not the only classic that Rankin Bass put out over the years.

I know some of them are kinda goofy, but that's just fine with me, cause so am I! LOL

A First for America

This year Americans used the democratic way, and voted to elect a new president. And what an exciting thing it is. For the first time in American history, we have an African American president. I, personally, think that is a good thing. I hope Mr. Obama does what he's promised, and makes this historic decision one that will be remembered fondly in our history books.

Like all the others, he seems honest and upright. He has the sweetest smile. One that any Washington DC dentist would be proud to maintain! LOL

But, one thing I heard him say does worry me. He said that we should "appease terrorists". That really scares me, and I hope he misspoke or has had second thoughts. It seems to me that they are the kind of people that can't be bargained with. That's just how I feel. I could be wrong, but I could be right, too. Time will tell.

With that said, I do wish Mr. Obama the best of luck!

Hey Peeps!

I just discovered a website that I want to tell you about! It's called Picnik. It has been out there for a while, but I hadn't tried it till now. It's a hoot, let me tell you!

If you like to use digital images in any way, you need to try it out. Not only does it do the normal fixes, but it has several very fun features, as well! And, can you believe you don't have to download anything? It does it all on the site. So cool!

For instance, here is a silly pic I made of my Mom!

I called it their "Christmas card"! LOL Isn't that fun?

Below are a couple screen shots I took while I was first playing with it. Notice all the neat things you can add or alter your photo with! If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend it! Oh, did I mention it's FREE??? Yeah!!!

A lot of the rest of the information was new to me, and a little alien, as I'm not really the business minded sort, but I think I can take her advice and do well. Or, should I say "Succeed"??? LOL

Hot Vacation

That's what I want! Yep! A vacation that doesn't get below, oh, let's say.... 80 degrees!!! That's the ticket!

Maybe I'm getting old, or maybe it's unusually cold for this time of year, but I am so ready for some tropical temps!

And that got me to thinking. It's been a long time since we've had a "real" vacation. Oh sure, a day in Ohio's Amish country is great, but it's just not the same. Know where I wanna go???

DISNEY!!!

I went when I was 15, but didn't get to see everything, and there's even more now!

Check it out! Epcot, Animal Kingdom, and Typhoon Lagoon, to name a few!

What? A 40 year old woman can't dream of Disney vacations??? Puleeze!! LOL I'm one of the biggest kids you'll ever know!

I want to get hugged by Mickey, and ride in the Tea Cups!

But you know, not very far away (at least at the Florida one) is another of my absolute favorite places to dream of! Sea World!

I wanna get splashed by Shamu. (Cause even though I want the hot weather, it's still nice to get cooled down by gigantic sea life! LOL)

And, of course, pet a dolphin!

I speak dolphin, you know! But only when I'm really excited! LOL

Hur Herald- Calhoun County WV

I'm not sure if I've told you before, but I was born in Grantsville, WV. It's a small town. Not exactly what you'd call a "one horse" town, though, because it's not unusual to see more horses than people. ;-) Perhaps Mayberryesque would be more fitting.

At one time, it was a fairly busy little burg, but that's when the Little Kanawha River was used by businesses to transport goods. You don't see much floating down the Little Kanawha now, except the odd duck or plastic milk jug. The quiet little river has seen busier days, that's for sure.

But, back to my main point. I wanted to share with you, a very active little online newsletter put out by some fine people near Grantsville, in a little place called Hur (technically, they're at Mt. Zion). The Hur Herald is Edited by Bob Weaver, Dianne Weaver, and Norma Knotts Shafer, and is self-proclaimed as "A Questionable Publication from West Virginia". However, I don't consider it to be questionable at all!

The Hur Herald is full of goings on all over Calhoun County, from sports scores to bake sales, and much, much more. There are wonderful stories and photos from the past (my personal favorite section), many interesting and thoughtful columns, obituaries, and a lot more. It's really quite fun (well, not the obituaries, obviously) to just peruse through leisurely.

Since I was born there, and have family there, it's always fun to learn about their (my) past, and get the juicy gossip that's going on now! LOL If you live in that area, or know folks over that way, I suggest you check it out. If I had any money, I'd bet that you won't be sorry! LOL
